The objective of this study was to analyze the portrayal of identity and the immigrant experience in “The Namesake,” examining its reflection of the contemporary American literary landscape. The research investigated various factors, including family, heritage, and societal expectations, influencing the characters’ journey of self-discovery and identity formation. Additionally, the study explored the cultural clashes and adaptations experienced by the characters as they sought to reconcile their Indian heritage with the American way of life. The research employed close reading as the data collection tool, and thematic analysis was conducted to achieve the research objectives. Berry’s acculturation model (1980) served as the theoretical framework. The findings revealed that Lahiri’s exploration of these themes significantly contributes to contemporary American literature, resonating with readers from diverse backgrounds and illuminating the complexities of navigating cultural identity and belonging in a globalized world. The study concluded that the novel’s enduring exploration of identity and cultural clashes makes it a powerful and enduring work in the realm of contemporary literature, resonating with audiences worldwide.
